Last night a man took his teeth out at the table. I won't go so far as to call it "shocking," but I think we can all agree that perhaps it's poor table manners? I was certainly surprised because quite frankly, he didn't even seem very old. So many questions arose in my head. Where did your teeth go, sir? Why do you have to take them out RIGHT NOW? How are you devouring that steak with dentures?
To his credit, he was embarrassed to be caught. He didn't think anyone was looking at him when his tablemates suddenly asked him a question. All of our heads swiveled his way as his hands were in his mouth. He took them out, looked up at me, and with a sweet gummy smile said, "I'm so sorry. I felt like I was at home."
I choose to take that as a compliment.
